The V-6 will always be expensive to maintain. changing the thermostat is a nightmare, belt changes are forever, the engine is less economical and less powerful. But it is far more tolerant of neglectful maintenance with the possible exception of timing belt changes, which will result in a broken engine if ignored.
The 4 cylinder asks only that it receive 5K oil changes and the PCV update. Unfortunately Saab never asked for that, and many cars didn't receive it, hence the sludge monster.
As a new car, it never made sense as the engine was very expensive to build (probably because of low volume), making the car both expensive to buy, expensive to maintain, not particularly fast, not as smooth as a V6 should be (on account of the screwy 54 degree included angle), and less economical. As a used car, the price premium to purchase the V6 is minimal if any, and the engine is far less likely to have a major problem from inadequate maintenance, so it's a far better proposition now than as a new car.
