...the V-6 is the better engine. The only downside to the V-6 that I continually hear about is the 60K timing belt change. Saab covers the first one. The dealer did mine when I had 78K after it had been done at 56k by an unknown indy. (I wanted to have it documented in an IRIS report).
If you read the board regularly, you will hear of a number of MAJOR problems especially relating to sludging and PCV updates. The 4cyl seems to also have more of a problem with the DIC than the V-6. Add to that the smoothness and power of the V-6 (especially in sport mode), and the sound of the engine, the V-6 is the better choice IMHO. I have been very happy and had few problems with the V-6 in my 2000 95SE. This is my 5th Saab and while I have been very happy with all of them, I really like the V-6 in my current car.
