Bob, good to hear from you again, but too bad about the occasion.
Unfortunately I don't think the car shuts down the injector on a presistent misfire. I think the fuel and air go into the catalytic converter, where combustion takes place. Maybe it's toast, maybe not. Most peoples' experience has been pressing on with a dead DI Cassette, meaning 3 cylinders worth of fuel and air, and in those cases the catalytic converter usually bites the dust. At least the misfire will drive the computer to run that bank rich (all that oxygen being sensed), cooling the exhaust.
You are probably correct in not assuming a failed DI Cassette, since the prinicpal failure mode kills the entire bank (all 3 cylinders), although less common failure modes that kill just one of the cylinders do exist. Good luck with it.
I usually end these posts encouraging owners to update the software, but I think MY99 doesn't accept the circa 2003 software update.
