Alternators have been quite reliable

Not just in 9-5s, not just in Saabs in general, but c'mon, who among us has had problems with alternators in the first 100,000 miles? OK, my '64 Valiant had a noisy bearing at something like 70,000 miles, and the French Electrics in the LongDepartedandUnlamented Simca collection couldn't take being dragged through the salt (they were located where Saab puts the water pumps, down low and up front).
Not that it can't happen. Clearly the alternator siezed, clearly that was caused by bearing failure, and clearly the bearing failure was the result of either gross mis-manufacture or damage. Anything could happen, someone in the Bosch factory drops the unit, someone assembling the engines in Soldertajle drops the unit, someone relplacing a head gasket...
BTW, the "lower cover" is probably what they also call the "belt guard". They seem to take a beating. I just replaced mine, and I will probably reinforce the badly cracked original with my favorite back-yard repair materials: old license plates and pop rivets.
