Shops know how terribly frightened people are about car break-downs. That fear leads to unnecesary, or premature service -and sometimes out and out deceptive (dare I say fraudulent) service.
I've had 3 9-5s encluding the new one and have not not had an alternator seize up. In fact, yours is the first I've read about on this board. Did you by any chance ask for return of the old part so you could personally verify the pully had seized?
At any rate, I suspect a lot of unnecessary repair happens. So when you couple that with necessary repair, it could lead one to an overly pessimistic opinion of the brand -or at least this model. It doesn't help when dealers charge twice as much for repair and service than an independent.
