Timing Chain Replace or Wait Advice?

My 02 Aero w/ 83K had some rattling noise for the past few weeks (sometimes like a diesel sound) before warming up. I took to the Indy and they said it's the timing chain and to fix would be $2K. I noted an oil leak (started about the time of the timing chain noise) and they said it was the head gasket leaking near the "T" area. To replace timing chains and fix oil leak would be $2500. The mechanic said either to trade it or fix if I plan to keep. I'd like to keep so here's my dilemma:
1. Fix now
2. Try torquing down the head gasket/open valve cover and inspect - and wait until the timing chains get louder (removing the oil pan to clean the pick-up screen)
3. "Roll in" a new timing chain and potentially cut/remove the balance shaft chain.
4. Trade off.
SAAB service said that they couldn't begin an engine sludge claim until the oil light comes on.
Thank you
