The timing chain is either stretched or it isn't. There is no guesswork here. As one of the posters stated, you or your mechanic has to remove the tensioner located behind the serp belt tensioner, and measure . I believe 15mm is max, and if it is even there, it is probably slopping around . Only piece that can be replaced with engine in car is the timing chain itself, via a roll in, and the guide in the valve cover. Balance shaft chain and all those bits are impossible to get at, without having motor out of car, or lifted so high up, you would have to disco everything anyways. Balance shaft chains can be removed, but care must be taken when doing this. Oftentimes, the balance chain is actually making more noise than timing chain, but you have no way of knowing this, until timing chain is replaced, and you still have major chain noise. By the way, rolling in a nwe timing chain is not that big a deal, as long as you take your time. Good luck, and regards - Tom S.
