Where do you live? If you live in the Colorado mountains you'll need to keep using 91 octane regardless....(there was a SAAB TSB put out just for this type of driving several years ago).
If you live in Michigan, you could go to a mid-grade fuel all year(here mid grade is 89)with no problems. The engine management T7 will adjust. Some feel they lose mileage with lower octane. I do not a.) believe that is is true, and/or b.)have never personally noticed it. You will have better starts first thing in the morning as mid grade ignites easier than premium.
My experience is that you will certainly not lose ~10% (as is posted below) in a mid-grade switchover. A dyno would be the way to test this claim either way....but FWIW I understand SAAB EPA certifies its engines at 87 octane fuel.
I run 87 in the coldest winter months with ZERO problems....but I use Top Tier fuels (=Shell fuels here in W. Mich.)
