I don't believe I claimed 10%, more like 5-7%, and if you read any of my prior posts on mpg you will see that I am well aware of those factors (especially wind direction) when I drive. I also periodically may reset the SID to get instantaneous readings, and I hand calc every tank. Lastly, I would never run one fuel on outbound and the other on return here in the West where we have 20-30kt prevailing winds during summer afternoons. That would guarantee results worse than a 2 mpg difference.
But after a while, when you take notes you get a feel for things, and while not empirical, I can tell you with 90% certainty that my LPT loses approx 2mpg (fwy) in hot weather if I run mid grade, which is usually 89 in these parts, premium being 91. I do suspect it has some carbon build up (it will ping occasionally on mid-grade), which would reinforce the need for a higher grade. So maybe I just get more adjustment from the engine mgmt.
At any rate, my lifetime average on this car is 26.4 mpg mixed city/fwy and I do not drive slow, so I am pleased with the results. In fact the car consistently beats the EPA rating, even at 75mph, which can't be just the tires (MXV4 Primacy). I would like to think that some of that is from using premium fuel, however, I may try mid-grade this winter after reading other folks comments indicating some benefit. Cheers.
