I think he's get a bitter taste from the older V6's in the 9000's and 900's. Those things sucked. The 9-5 V6 is based off those engines but it MUCH improved. I have a 2001 V6 9-5 that just hit 180,000 miles yesterday. It has not been inexpensive to maintain, but with 180k miles on it that's expected. All the repairs I've had to do to my car apply to the 4-cyl too, with exception to the timing belt AND tensioners every 60k miles. It's a very fun car to drive and I love the sound of it. I think the V6 is a better bet than the earlier (pre 2004) 4-cyls because you never have to worry about head gasket failure, oil sludge, headbolts stretching, etc... They're much less of a crapshoot. The only risk is the timing belt. If you can't prove it was done at the last 60k mile interval, go replace it with the tensioner. It's about a $750 job at an independent Saab shop. I say go for it!!
