Auto vs Manual tranny in Aero

I have a 2000 Aero with manual tranny. Unfortunately I'm not entirely happy with this drivetrain, especially in the first two gears. Power delivery is somewhat bursty, there's a low-RPM dead spot in 2nd gear unless 1st is reved pretty high (which is noisy), and smooth upshifts require a delay between gears to allow the engine to slow down. I'm considering trading this car in for an automatic even though that is an expensive proposition. I drove a 2001 Aero auto today, and other than a brief lag off the line, it felt pretty smooth and strong. Compared to my 2000 manual, it seemed to use lower RPMs with higher turbo boost to achieve it's power output in normal around-town driving. I also drove a 2002 Arc with the 5-speed auto, and it provided the most linear power output, although I attribute much of that to the LPT and V6. Haven't driven the 2002 Aero yet. I'm interested in other experiences/opinions about the various Aero transmissions. Is there anyone out there who really likes the manual? Is the 4-speed auto any good, despite that fact that everybody says the new 5-speed auto is better? I'm most interested in differences in around-town performance, since I'm happy with the manual transmission on the highway. TIA for any experiences or opinions!
