Related question on fuel efficiency

This question may not be specific to the Aero, but can anyone explain why manual tranny has a higher highway fuel efficiency rating? If we assume that the car is travelling at a constant speed in top gear with the auto, then the torque converter should be mechanically locked up avoiding wasted energy due to slippage. If the engine RPMs were the same, then I'd expect the fuel efficiency to be roughly the same. Given that the top speed is pretty close to the same for the auto and manual, I don't think there's a significant difference in the engine RPMs in top gear.
