Hello,
Thank you to all for the great advice. The problem was the pulley on the timing tensioner. The outer ring had detatched from the bearing and a few ball bearings were missing. I took a picture but can't figure out how to post it. The marks on the cams were still properly aligned so luckily the belt had not jumped any teeth. Quite a lucky break. I purchased the tools and changed the belt and pulleys myself. It isn't too bad, just look at everything carefully before you take it apart to make sure you understand how it works. It took about 6 hours over three days because I was extra careful but after doing it once it should only take about 2 hours. Hint: adjust the upper pulley between the cams to align the front 2 cams with the rear 2 cams. Adjust the lower pulley to align the cams with the crankshaft. Set the tensioner and then rotate 2 revolutions and check everything. It's been about two weeks and has been running fine.
