Had an all-too-brief experience with a 2000 V6

I found this wagon for a really good price back in August, and EVERYTHING worked, which might be somewhat rare in 9-5s. Things like the information display panel losing pixels, blend door issues, etc. are very common in 9-5s.

I went with the V6, and I would be extremely paranoid about pre-2004 four cylinders. Did the timing belt myself, you'd have no problem with that.

On the whole the car was quite solid, a decent driver, but I fault it for its seats (Aero seats are much better) and very poor fuel economy in V6 guise. If I found another in good shape and cheap like the first one (which was lost in an accident a few weeks ago), I wouldn't hesitate, but for anything near normal market prices I WOULD hesitate.

If you're looking at 9-5s prior to 2004 I say avoid 4s, and check any V6s for evidence of failing turbos, bad DI cassettes (which can lead to bad cats very quickly), leaking oil coolers (do a search for details), and of course any record of timing belt changes. My "trigger" price for a 99 or 2000 would be anything under two grand for a car in good shape. That's what I found the first time. I almost pulled the trigger on a 99 the other day before I got the owner to tell me it was losing oil rapidly. That to me sounds like a turbo (very expensive in V6s) or rings.

Another thing worth mentioning is an apparent availability crunch on the often-failing four cylinder DI cassettes, so keep that in mind if looking at those engines.

Also, all 9-5s are subject to ABS failures of various sorts, and recent consensus on this board is that rebuilding the modules only works maybe 50-75% of the time, so a failure there could be costly.

Overall I was reasonably pleased with the 9-5 but I suspect it might prove easier to find a cheap 9000 that will stay that way, especially given your experience rebuilding every aspect of them.
