We've driven 9Ks for the last 14 years and have also had a 9-5 for the last 10. The 9-5 has been a bit fussy (I don't think I'll buy a first model year again) but it has held up pretty well -- no rust, nice durable leather -- and has grown on me.
I'm now considering replacing my 97 CSE with a newer 9-5. Yesterday I drove an 06 9-5 back to back with an 06 530xi and an 06 A6 Quattro and was really impressed by the Saab. The redesign in 06 made the car uglier but it improved the power & handling and the sport seats are great. The BMW handles a bit better but I don't like the way it looks inside or out and I found the steering a bit light. The Audi, though attractive, seemed dull to drive. I'm probably just stuck in my ways and don't appreciate the finer points of these cars.
The 97 CSE is a great and reliable vehicle. Saab worked most of the bugs that plagued earlier 9Ks. (I had a 1990 that was much more problematic.) I'm thinking that late-model 9-5s may be another great vintage.
Good luck with your decision!
