We have a 2000 9-4 (4 cylinder) and a 2004 9-4 Aero. The Garrett turbo used on the non-Aero 4 cylinders is bad news in terms of reliability, with our 2000 9-5 requiring it to be replaced at 25,000 miles and a second time at 75,000 miles. Other than the turbo the car has had the following issues (now at 83,00 miles): headlight relay, ignition lock cylinder, coolant bypass valve, and SID display.
Our 2004 9-5 Aero has been exceptionally reliable, with no problems with the Mitsubishi TD-04 turbo (now at 36,000 miles). The only problems encountered have been a faulty engine coolant temperture sensor, and a driver's seat subframe that required replacement.
My brother has a 1999 9-5 with the V-6 and he has had very good luck with that car, with no engine related issues at all (at 115,00 miles). So, when it comes to 9-5s, V-6 is not a dirty word!
If you decide to check out 9-5s, I would look for a 2004 or newer since those cars have the updated PCV system and have not had the incidence of sludge issues on the 4 cylinder engine as the earlier cars.
