my '99 at about 110k got real loose. so loose a few times it wasnt fully into P and the car wouldnt start! have to reach under the battery to make sure the lever is all the way in P. I did not want to spend the $250ish (Saab dealer only part) for the entire cable linkage so I did the following: (1) remove battery and batt tray to get to it. socket ball pops right off if loose already. pulled out remaining plastic socket ball and I found something made of plastic in my tool bin that fit over the lever peg nicely. removed it from the peg and carved the outside of it and sanded, etc until it fit nicely inside the ball socket on the cable and snugly still fits over the lever peg. this was all at $0. I have since tried to find something better to fit it but have not yet. it's still a little loose, definitely not firm, but always shifts to all gears no problem (2) I went ahead and ordered a used one from Goldwing for $65. they sent the entire shifter assembly with the cable so I have extra spare parts if I ever need them. wish there was a way but no way to just remove the part I need. what a horrible design. so, eventually I will get the gumption up to peel apart my interior to replace the entire cable or eventually my retro-fit job will fail and I'll be forced to. I've been shifting with the rigged fix for about a year now!! good luck! hope this helps.
