A/C work is not so bad at all. If you are a DIY type, you will be able to work on the A?C system. You can have the system evacuated at a shop ... if its not already empty ... by all means *do not* vent refrigerant into the atmosphere.
The only special tools you need are a set of good gauges.
Do replace the receiver dryer as TG says.
and B is 100% correct ... dont just assume you need a compressor.
it is more likely that you are leaking refrigerant from the aluminum pipe that runs under the MAF or the aluminum pipe that runs next to the PS Pump. Both of these rattle and wear a hole. If you lost refrigerant the compressor will not kick on. The pressure switch detects low pressure and protects the compressor by not allowing it to turn on.
The only daunting part of AC work on the 9-5 is access to the components like the compressor itself or the evaporator.
