I replaced the compressor on another vehicle. Like someone else said, it's a do-able project for DIY but there are lots of opportunities to screw it up.
1. You need to find out how much and what type of PAG oil to add. Depending on which components are replaced the amount of oil will vary.
2. You will need a manifold gauge set to add the proper amount of refrigerent
3. You will need a professional grade vacuum pump capable of -29hg suction. That's the only way to boil off any residual moisture in the ac system. I run the that level of vacuum from at least 30 minutes before adding the new refrigerent. My experience was that the system needed that level of vacuum in order to draw in the correct amount of refrigerant.
4. Once you've vacuumed out the system and before adding refrigerant is a good time to check for leaks in the system. If the system holds negative pressure you can be fairly assured it will not leak once the refigerant is added.
By the way, you'll need to replace the receiver drier, and I'd also suggest replacing the bypass valve.
