I've done it with two hammers, and it works quite well. I works best if the hammers are different sizes. I have a 3 lbs. sledge hammer and a small ball peen hammer that I used. The large hammer goes on the back of the chain, and you use the small hammer to peen the pin. Make sure you fill the top the head in the chain guide area with rags so if the link plate falls you don't have to fish for it. Peen the pins until they look about the same size as the adjacent links. It is easier than it sounds.
