I always wondered why this feature is not available on the 9-5. It seems almost every other same class car has it... And for some reason it really annoyed me when on a warm day you would get out of the car only to find your sunroof open and then have to climb back in and press the switch.
Following extensive research into the problem, I decided to get something installed that would pull up the windows and close the roof.
The windows were easy - an alarm garage installed an extra third-party module to control the power windows. This gets connected to the window switch wires and the TWICE. When you arm the alarm, the signal from TWICE activates the device which powers all windows one by one until all are closed.
Ahh but the sunroof was tricky. The motor in the sunroof has internal circutry and an extra lead connected to the 'start/on' power, therefore to move the sunroof you first need to power this lead, waking up the sunroof controller, and only then ground the respective lead to move the roof.
It finally took me two separate third-party timer circuits to get the thing to work:
- the first one powers the 'start/on' lead of teh sunroof motor (you need to fit a diode to the sunroof harness otherwise the car comes alive when the timer starts - bloody scared me the first time; I thought this was The Short Circuit) and stays on for about 20 seconds;
- the second timer engages several seconds later and grounds the close switch (thank god there is only one switch to ground no matter how you opened the roof) and stays engaged for about 15 seconds, enough to close the sunroof from any position.
The trigger fronts for both timers come from the optional power window module I mentioned earlier - it powers each window sucessively in any case, so I used two of its four output leads to the window switch to trigger the timers one after the other.
Apart from all this, I installed a relay to cut off power to the triggers when you switch the ignition on just to be on the safe side and avoid them engaging while you are driving the car (besides, without it, the sunroof would close simultaneously with the second window 8-))...)
All in all... A low cost, but a very high effort/time-consuming job. The window module was USD 80 installed (that's Russia prices, US labor would probably be more). The triggers + relay + small stuff (connectors, etc.) were about USD 50, and my priceless time.
Advice... SAAB PLEASE INCLUDE THIS FEATURE IN YOUR NEXT CAR AND SPARE ME THE EFFORT OF DOING THIS FOR YOU!!!!
