The conenction between the steering wheel and the car is made from two coiled cable pairs. One pair is conencted to the airbag, the other pair is conencted to the horn button. Steering wheels with integrated buttons for the audio system connect differently valued resistors across the horn button. The SID is then responsible for the translation of the different resistance values into commands sent to the audio system. Adding a S button woild be trivial for Saab, just a new button, new resistor, and some small software changes.
The reason why the switches are unlit is obvious.
