I don't see the logic behind leaving the buttons unlit. If you memorize the buttons by their location and feel, then you don't have to look at them. Nobody is forcing you to look at them. However, what happens when the buttons aren't lit? In the case of the steering wheel buttons, you have to take your hand off the wheel and take your eyes off the road so that you can use the dash buttons. That is more unsafe than a quick glance at the wheel without moving your hands. Likewise for the overhead buttons for the sunroof and interior lights. If you don't have the buttons memorized, you are forced to fumble with the buttons until you find the correct one. This is more distracting than a quick glance to identify the correct button.
The bottom line is that if the buttons are lit, the user has the choice whether to look at them or not. This is the "safest" possible arrangement IMHO. With the buttons being unlit, Saab has made the choice for us. We have to memorize the buttons or deal with the consequences of trying to figure them out in the dark.
If memorizing the locations of the controls is such a grand safety frature, why are there lights on ANY of the dash controls? As a matter of fact, why do we even have labels on all those controls? Drivers could just memorize every control in their car and never look at them, even in daylight! Of course this is simply not feasible. So why treat the steering wheel and overhead controls any differently than the rest?
