Sounds early for the first one but as other say, do you run the tank between 1/2 and empty or between 1/2 and full?
Constantly being low on gas instead of high will put more stress on it since the gas is both cooling and lubricating the pump.
And sometimes which you won't know if the pump is not dissected (destroyed in the process), it might be a tiny little piece of dirt that worked its way loose from somewhere and jammed the pump impeller.
Even though high, the price is about the same as mine so they didn't charge a whole bunch for fault tracing but more just to replace.
I'm not a fan of taking the pump basket apart and replacing just the pump motor but leave that to DIY people to fiddle with.
You cannot safeguard for a pump that gets jammed by foreign objects but it is possible to look at the amperage ripple using a labscope to see if the brushes and commutator is starting to get worn. That way you can catch a pump toward the end of its lifespan.
