I've had the same problem. My 2003 9-5 ditched me on the side of the road around 60k, and just stranded my husband last week at 120k. Fuel pump both times.
I was advised not to let the gas get below 1/4 tank - as much as I drive, it is just not realistic to hit the gas station every other day b/c Swedish engineers designed a critical part to require constant babying.
I'm replacing then ditching the car. My old BMW never needed this much time, energy or money, even at 14 years and 192k miles.
