Trust me Peter - I worked in a franchised dealer for 16 years - your problem is caused by the clutch not releasing completely.
Your 5 forward gears have all synchromesh (this means that the two engaging gear speeds are matched - synchronized) - reverse dosent - you are asking the transmission to engage a gear that is not stationary beacuse the clutch is still partially engaged and rotating the gear-clusters.
When the engine is off - all the gear clusters are stationary and you will be able to select any gear at will.
It may be an adjustment issue of some kind, - presumably the transmission was removed for the selector fork to be replaced?
The dealer hasn't completed the job properly if you still have selection issues.
