Not true - with your 5 forward speeds the all the gear clusters are rotating in the same direction - even with partial clutch drag present you will be able to shift ratios.

As you will have gathered by now the gears involved in getting the vehicle to reverse are NOT all rotating in the same direction - so with clutch drag present it will either be difficult or well nigh impossible to select reverse.

And yes, if you force selection you WILL bend the selector forks - not too hard to understand given the forces/amount of leverage you have from the end of the stick.

You also comment "The clutch doesn't engage or disengage at a different height for reverse!"

Exclamation mark well deserved and absolutely correct! The transmission is extremely dependent on the clutch cover/pressure plate that is bolted the engine's flywheel fully clearing the clutch friction plate which slides alond the splines of the gearbox input shaft.

Clearly, this is not the case with your vehicle - with the pedal fully depressed it would seem that the friction faces of the clutch plate are both in contact with the clutch cover/pressure plate and the flywheel concurrently - this is not good news and is what we are terming as 'clutch drag'.
