Also picked up an '02 Aero a few weeks ago. I've done about 600 miles so far. Mine is a manual transmission.
Agree on most of your likes. I'm trying to keep the RPMs below 4000 until the one month checkup and it's killing me. I don't know how you have the discipline to keep it under 3000 RPM--plus at the rate you're putting mileage on the car it will be about five months before you can finally open 'er up!
I don't like the parking assist. First, I don't really trust it. Second, you can't hear it over the stereo. And third, it feels like it always lags a bit--if you are reversing even at a relatively slow speed, I feel like you could easily back into something before it has time to change to a fast or solid signal. Haven't used the mirrors for reversing--requires too much effort.
The 1300 RPM fast idle at start also bugs me. Didn't have this on my 9-3 SE.
Xenons are great, handling is very good. Rain-sensing wipers are good in some conditions, but not all. I've got a couple squeaks and rattles, one of which I took care of with some electrical tape, one in the dash that I am sure the dealer will be able to get, and one in the headliner which is difficult to reproduce so I'm sure I'll have to live with it.
One issue is a whining noise coming from what I think is the fuel pump. It is very loud and noticeable. I'll see what the dealer says about it and if they say its normal I'll ask them to let me test another Aero to make sure.
Sure there is some vibration in the steering at idle, but hey, its a four-banger. Haven't experienced the transmission noise you describe, but then again I have a different tranny than you do.
Waiting for 1000 mile oil change to start playing with ESP on/off.
Overall, great car. Amazing on the highway, very comfortable (love the seats). Still not sure what to do with the tape deck in the dash--about as useful in 2002 as an 8-track.
