Now that you know what is required mechanically to fix the car, and since you don't need it fixed immediately, maybe someone will be willing to treat it as "fill-in work" in their garage for a lower cost to you.
Not that anyone will do this job for free, but knowing they can give it a low priority status might save you $500.
There have been a few folks on this board that have successfully done a full timing chain and guide replacement themselves - both with the engine is in the car and with it removed. A very knowledgeable hobbyist mechanic is another money saving option for a vehicle you can live without for a while.
