Re: Comments so far....Toe in is the issue Posted by saabsince 93b [Email] (#972) [Profile/Gallery] (more from saabsince 93b) on Sun, 19 Sep 2010 09:58:48 In Reply to: Comments so far...., Jeff O, Sun, 19 Sep 2010 08:22:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Camber is not a bad thing. Take a look at performance cars like the Porsche. Lots of rear camber. Yes the tires wear unevenly, but not a big issue. Race track set up of most cars have lots of camber front and rear.
The big issue on Saab 9-5 rear suspensions is that as the ride height and therefore the suspension are lower the camber increase, AND so does the toe-in. The geometry is designed that way to reduce the scrub angle in a turn. The outside rear wheel actually helps the rear steer. This toe-in does a good job in a turn, and the condition is only temporary.
Sagging springs increase the camber and the toe-in. Excessive toe in when the car is running straight increased tire wear and causes cupping. This cupping is the big problem with Saab 95 rear suspensions.
With increased camber you will notice the inside edges of the tire wearing more than the outside.
With too much toe-in the tire surface will be uneven. You can run your hand over it and feel the ridges are sticking up in some area. Severe toe can ruin tires in 5000 to 10,000 miles over even less. The tires get noisy and start to feel and sound like snow tires.
The steps to curing this:
1. proper ride height to WIS specs
2. good outer lateral arm bushings
3. Good trailing arm bushings
4. Four wheel alignment to WIS specs
The best way to increase ride height is with pre-load spacers.
Getting the rear ride height right may get toe-in to spec, or mean just a little adjustment.
