You don't need a new plug. I think a new drain plug washer is recommended, although I've done it without. It is a very cheap <$1 aluminum washer.
DIY is better for most of us, but it's harder to make this case if you don't plan to do any more DIY work in the future... which might be the case since you don't already have these tools.
I doubt you're going to kill it with a flush. I believe John Meyers said he's only seen a couple of failures of these transmissions in total. They're very solid.
