This depends on the kid.
When I got a 9000 CS for #1 kid a friend who's also Saab guy said, "It maybe the LPT engine but it will still go 130 mph!" He thought it was a less than good idea.
When I got a '9-3 SE for #2 kid I was a bit concerned as she always wanted me to punch it when we were out in my 9K semi-Aero.
But both kids turn out to be quite responsible. #1 is the less cautious of the two, but is generally a "5-over the limit driver" and doesn't take chances. #2 is Miss Drive the Speed Limit and is very cautious.
I did a driving contract with each kid that specified what happens should they have an accident or speeding ticket. Works great.
Also, when you can, get your kids to the Tire Rack Street Survival class when there's one in your area. They learn a lot in one day and come out better drivers.
