OK.
I finally got fed up and decided to drop the oil pan, and guess what? The oil pickup screen was clogged with sludge, despite it being cleaned up by the PO last year. The PO had also used AEROBIC sealant on the pan, so bits of that were clogging the screen as well. I figure the screen was about 75% clogged overall.
After cleaning the screen and reassembling, I had around 10-12psi at idle, which was a huge improvement over the 4-6psi at idle and a binging oil warning light that I had previously.
I also decided to move from 10W-30 oil to heavier 10W-40, and that brought the pressure up nicely, so the car now runs at ~15psi at idle and ~30psi at 2000rpm. Not spec, but at least I feel like the engine is getting oil now. Those are relatively safe pressures, aren't they?
Moral of the story: IF YOU HAVEN'T CHECKED YOUR PICKUP SCREEN RECENTLY, CHECK IT, and USE ANAEROBIC SEALER WHEN YOU PUT IT BACK ON! If you are afraid of the job as I was, don't be. It only took me an hour to drop the pan, and that was with me lying out in the cold on the icy driveway with the front of the car up on ramps, so if I can do it, so can you.
Thanks to everyone who has offered assistance and advice. I hope it will be awhile now before we get yet another show-stopping issue with this car.
Here's hoping that my experience will help someone here on this board!
