I was at my local dealer here in the UK yesterday and saw their 2002 9-5 Aero Wagon that has the genuine Saab SatNav (Dealer fit only) kit installed.

The system is the VDO-Dayton MS5000 unit - the removable LCD panel sits on a sturdy steel bracket that protudes between the top of the audio unit and the lower edge of the centre dash air vent.

Suprisingly it dosen't look as bad as it sounds - the silver finish of the LCD screen matches the Aero's dash colour well.

Negatives? Well if the centre dash vent is important to you then......well lets say you can't see it anymore. The MS5000 has a decent user interface and attempts to 'second guess' your eventual destination choice by eliminating letters that are no longer possible permutations of the available place names - i.e. I live in 'Warwick' I only had to select WARW before it filled the ICK bit in for itself.

The map display graphics are not as neat as say the latest Pioneer or Jag X-type systems that show traffic intersections in 3D with the path you must take graphically displayed. That said - the display is high up and is in the drivers line of sight - no looking down like most systems - but not as neat as the 'pop-up' in the Volvo-S60.

It's tempting - I'd probably leave the display off and live with the bracket sticking out unless I was going to some new place - I use my vehicles on company business (our draconian UK tax laws make it worth while) and usually visit a new client perhaps one or twice a week - so I can sort of justify it though you can buy an awful lot of maps for £1500 (Uk pounds0.
