It is good but on the thin side. The blanket recommendation of 0W40 on 9-5s is to rationalize the oil recommendation for both 9-3 and 9-5 models, IMO. It is certainly much better than the 5W30 synthetic blend that SaabUSA used to provide as the "warranty" oil (used for the "free maintenance" program), an oil that didn't meet its own European spec (ACEA A3/B3). Mobil 1 0W40 (or Castrol 0W30 or one of a couple of boutique oils that meet GM's LL 025 A/B spec) is essential in the 9-3 for owners who follow the oil condition monitor. The 9-5 doesn't have an oil condition monitor, so the oil change interval is "by guess and by golly". The plague of sludged engine points to many people who guessed wrong.
I would certainly switch to a 5W or 0W oil for very cold weather. Being a snowbird, I don't experience cold weather any longer.
