thanks... I'd rather not leave a complete working key in the car (not terribly secure), but probably not the end of the world...
sounds like my best option is, to cut an extra gutless key and make up a diy banana remote with the guts that would have been in that key, instead in one of the old used keys I'm cannibalizing for my new keys... cutting off the shaft of the old key (to avoid confusion/accidental lock cylinder damage)... put the 2 on a keychain link + separate the "banana" off to toss in the glove box, re-linking before starting the car... a little kludgy but (hopefully) solves the problem... I'd just leave the programmed guts somewhere in the car + not mess with links etc, but I'm guessing the transponder needs to be right near the key when you turn it to get powered to communicate with TWICE... hopefully in the banana is good enough! I might test that + report back... I assume proximity is important as otherwise there might be problems if 2 differently programmed keys were in the car at once (eg in the pocket of a passenger)... I gather the transponder chip is not powered by battery even in 2004 (for reliability reasons)... I suppose in the worst case I can push a remote button...
too bad they don't make a low profile transponder only key for 2004+... probably very little market...
thanks again!
James...
