...it's an 11 year old car with 100k+ miles on it. Even if '99 was a good year compared to the rest, nothing anyone says about reliability is going to mean anything. That is a very long time for lots of variables to affect the performance and wear on the car. And by now, the "common" issues have probably already been fixed once... or maybe even twice.
Personally, I'd have no issue buying it if the price were right, probably as a second car, because I like to fix my own cars and have an ounce or two of DIY know-how. Would I rely heavily on a 1999 9-5 as my sole provider of perfectly reliable transportation? Probably not.
If I were buying that car the first things I would do is drop the oil pan, check for sludge, clean the pickup screen, inspect the PCV system, update to PCV #6 if necessary, replace the serpentine belt and all associated pulleys and tensioner. For me, that's a fun (sort of) way to spend a Saturday. For others, it's a big freaking bill at a shop.
The way I look at it, is if you really want to own an older Saab, you need to be willing to get your hands dirty and do some DIY. Otherwise repair bills are going to add up fast.
