A couple of things...
SAAB is aware of the vibration problem at idle on the '02s and is working on a shim kit to fix that. I think there are a few people on the board that have it installed as a "beta test" and they have reported that it helps significantly. The '01s didn't vibrate at all.
The 2.3L is a tried-and-true SAAB engine. Remember, SAAB heritage is based on turbocharged 4 cylinders. The 2.3 has been around for quite some time and is touted as one of the most durable 4 cylinders around.
The 3.0L V6 is a GM-designed engine built in the UK. It gives you a little more horsepower but is not as smooth as the 4 cylinder. It has also experienced questionable reliability. This engine is driven by a timing belt as opposed to a timing chain... which means higher maintenance costs down the road (after the "free" change at 60K).
My dealer allows me into the shop area when I bring my cars into be serviced to talk with the technicians while they're working on them, etc. I like to see how things are done and I use this as a learning opportunity as well. After listening to some side conversations between the mechanics RE: the V6 and specifically asking which one they see more problems with, the choice to go with the 2.3L 4-cylinder was very, very easy.
If you want the power but don't want to get the V6, I recommend the Aero. It's an awesome car.
