Running engine w/o serp belt to diagnose sound

I need to diagnose a whining sound on my '00 lpt wagon. Can I slacken the tensioner and put the allen key in it and run for 15-20 seconds with the belt left in place without removing it entirely? Or will it get shredded or cause other problems unless I take it fully out? (I just installed new pulleys, tensioner, and belt, but this noise was there before that and has not changed.) Thanks.
