I'm on Staten Island and drive about 300 miles a week, much of it highway. I needed good gas mileage, good all weather driving, safety and roomy interior. 9-5 was perfect. I got a 3 year lease in '01 (I got 2 identical 9-5's btw). From parking in the city and the normal mall and shopping center parking lots, I have enough little dings and scratches from all the inconsiderate clods out there, that I hate to take these cars anywhere where they have even the remotest chance of being parked 'in public'. I'm the guy parking 100 yards away where no one else is (when possible) just to reduce the risk of the idiot with the '86 Buick who will just as soon slam into my door as look at me. Many times when I know I'm going to the city, even when (or especially when)I know I'll be parking in a garage, I take my minivan!
If you are in NYC proper, given the parking situation there, what's the point of a new car that will be routinely parked in small spots, with alternate side of the street parking headaches, and alot of careless pedestrian traffic -- you'll get sick everytime you see a new scratch on it! I'd suggest buying or leasing a used car in decent shape, for the little amount of driving you'll be doing. Much less wear and tear on your heart!
