The primary recommendation from the original launch, at least up through 2005 after which GM pretty well cleaned house in Trollhattan, was ACEA A3/B3 fully synthetic. There are a smattering of XW30 oils that meet A3/B3, but most oils meeting that spec are 40 weight or higher.
The factory manual called for 5W40 full synthetic fairly early, and it was the factory fill in my '02 Aero. 5W30 synthetic blend was the "warranty oil" for US dealers providing the offered "free maintenance". When first offered, the 5W30 "Saab oil" met ACEA A3/B3, but later the formula was changed and it was ACEA A1/B1, which is both lower viscosity and lacking in endurance.
The switch in 2005 to M1 0W40 for the 9-5 "warranty oil" was made in part to rationalize the products to using the same oil for all models, and no doubt in part in response to the sludged motors that had sullied Saab's reputation.
The use of "low tension rings" was dictated by GM Corporate to meet the fuel economy target for the car, along a with a low-volume oil pump. GM isn't the only company to play that game - research the Mazda "Skyactiv" gasoline motor and you will see both reduced piston friction and "high efficiency" oil pump listed among their "accomplishments" to create a high mpg engine.
Anyway, the OG 9-5 V-6 does not require 40 weight oil and does not have a history of sludge.
