I don't think it is an extended warranty program for cracked pistons?
I know that GM was forced to an extended warranty program due to engine sludge and engine failures. This was mostly orchestrated by Swedish insurance companies that saw a high number of engine failures they had to pay for.
Swedish warranty rules differs from US in that your car insurance company picks up the tab after I think 1 year of factory warranty and they are not interested in giving out money just as much as the car makers hate to give it out.
So, suddenly you had a situation where someone with a little bit more clout then a few Saab owners here and there started to push the subject.
Volvo has just as many problems with oil consumption and plugged PCV systems from around 2000 and up.
Volvo have had plugged PCV systems since about 1976 with the B21 engine but those engines up to B230 couldn't care less if it was open or plugged and it wasn't until the craze in around 1999-2000 that it suddenly started to become a big problem with engines consuming more oil than ever before all in the name of saving fuel.
