Good afternoon all ... was hoping the knowledgeable folks on this site can help with a diagnosis.

With no previous warning/symptoms, my car would not start after stopping at the store on my way home from work. I was in the store for 10 minutes, and when I tried to start it, it started briefly (a couple seconds) before it died. The car would crank, but not start. I left it to cool down, but it still wouldn't start. Had it towed home, and tried the following (after extensive research on this site and others):

- checked several fuses, no problems
- tried starting car while ignition fluid was sprayed into the air intake - car would fire but not run
- checked fuel pressure at schrader valve - none when at rest or when cranking the starter
- checked current at the fuel pump fuse - only registered when car was in START (not while in ON).
- checked current at fuel pump, has power.
- listened for fuel pump - can't hear anything.

As you can see, I'm thinking it's the fuel pump and/or filter, but I thought it was weird that the pump fuse was not registering a current when in the ON position (doesn't the fuel pump need power when the car is running?). What is the likelihood that replacing the pump/filter the problem, and what could I be missing? I'd like to fix this myself, as I've put a bunch of money into the car lately and am ready to junk it if it requires significant repairs. But I would hate to put in a new pump/filter only to find out it still won't run. If there's a possibility it's something else, I'm curious to know what it could be.

Oh - and if there's anyone in the Milwaukee area that would like to help me with the diagnosis/repair, let me know. :)

Thanks in advance for your assistance!
