All the switches on the steering wheel do is send the same signal to the Transmission ECU as moving the console lever fore and aft in the "manual" gate. Up a gear or down a gear, that's all. The only difference is that the wheel switches have to get translated by SID, then SID sends the signal to the trans ECU, but that shouldn't be any kind of noticeable lag.
Note that on these cars, it is in no way a manual transmission fitted with stuff to make it shift like an automatic. It is still an automatic transmission, but you can select manual control over gear selection.
Saab did have a "clutchless" manual transmission option, called Sensonic. This was a manual 5-speed fitted with an electric over hydraulic clutch mechanism operated by an ECU. This was only available for a short time on the early NG 900, and ONLY in Europe. But that has nothing to do with the "Sentronic" Manumatic in 2003- 9-5s and 9-3s...
The few times I drove cars with these and engaged the "manual", I can't recall having any problems with it. They shifted when I told them. And the six-speed in the 9-3SS I drove was VERY good at shifting. You might mistake it for a real manual trans!
