you know, I've never even used the flappy paddle shifters on our 9-5... I find I can put the car in whatever gear I want with the pedal... the car never seems to be in the wrong gear (whereas I've never driven an Asian car with a tolerable auto-tranny)... a lot of that has to do with the turbo and the gearing choices (aka good engineering in the 9-5)...
One of the pros/cons (depending how you look at it) of the manumatic stuff is that it protects the tranny from driver error, so the con aspect of that is that it needs to nanny to do that, which takes time... I've found that sufficiently frustrating in most cars that use this that I usually give up on manumatics... I used them in the subaru rentals we did, as it was better than not using it (which was horrendous - always seemingly in the wrong gear)... the biggest annoyance with the manumatic in the suby was when downshifting coming to a light - it became a shifting competition at times...
anyway, I'm not the best one to give advice here, as I never use it in the 9-5... It's probably worth a try if you have a chance to give one a test drive...
