The 2003+ auto is a Japanese transmission and a good one at that. My wife and my son have autos in their 2003 and 2004 Aeros mostly because they have commutes in heavy LA traffic at times. The autos word well and I feel they are really good transmissions. Next best thing would be dual clutch auto like Porsche uses.
I have a 2001 Aero with stick, and recently installed the genuinesaab shifter. I replaced the end of stick bushings at the same time. It is amazing how positive and precise the 5 speed manual can be with that shifter. We have owned this one since new and have 173,000 miles on it and the trans is still great.
