Other than viscosity, oil has sliding friction. ILSAC "GF" oils are required to have "friction modifiers" for better mileage, while any oil with viscosity that ends in a "40" or higher is automatically excluded from ILSAC. One of the things about heavy duty diesel oils (like Rotella) is that they seem to never include friction modifiers - must conflict with some other HD diesel requirement.
Especially with sliding cam followers, our 9-5s can benefit from those friction modifiers. Back in the day, GM or someone claimed a 3% mileage improvement just from using roller cam followers. I documented an 8% mileage increase on my 1980 900 simply by using a teflon oil additive. That engine, with its high friction crossed helical gear driven water pump, oil pump, and distributor in addition to sliding cam followers, benefited greatly from lower sliding friction.
