Ron, I haven't had to change a tire for at least 15 years so I was comfortable with the spacesavers as well. But that was until last night.
My wife and 5 year old had just come back from a trip and arrived at the airport parking lot around midnight to find a flat tire on our around-town beater and "airport" car, a '91 Honda Accord. The flat was on the rear so I was lucky and didn't have to move two tires. But the donut tire (we're the original owners so I know it was the one that came with the car) went flat on the way home. I was about a mile form home when it started flapping, but I said screw it and drove it home anyway. I did check the pressure after I mounted it, it was OK. And I kept the speed under 45mph. Maybe the tire was just too old, dunno.
But the damn thing was loud and rough being on the back of the car. And since it lowered the rear end it make the steering squirrelly as well. I knew the car wouldn't handle anywhere near the same so I took the 20 mile trip on the backroads instead of the expressway.
This one incident has given me the motivation to get full size spares on all three of my cars. It's not an ecomomic decision. It wasn't safe to drive on the donut. Especially for the 9-5, which is our long-distance travel car.
