Oil change philosophy Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Aero 30 day inspection/report, frank ![]() |
Back when we had leaded gas that produced a lot of condensation in crankcase, non-detergent oils, and cast iron cars, then a 3k oil change was prudent. When we went to unleaded gas which would be better for any car, particularly old Alfa Bugatti type classics as it produces much less condensation and crankcase crud from blow buy, synthetic oil, not just detergent oil but sythetics and synthetic blends, and now that engines are aluminum and steel eliminating the need for lead in the gas to lube valve seats. With all this improvement 5-7.5k was acceptable. Synthetic oil is the final bridge to a 10k oil change interval. Many cars with oil change indicaters instead of fixed intervals go 12-15k between changes. Doesn't Mobil 1 recommend 15k?
So what's wrong with the severe service schedule designation for a 5k change. Afterall that's only ten extra oil changes or $300-500 over 100k? Is that extra money good insurance? Poor maintenance or lack of maintenace causes all kinds problems, but I've personally never heard of anyone have oil related wear items become a problem with a well maintaned vehicle.
Without abuse most modern engines go 250k between rebuilds and valve jobs. We don't routinely overhaul engines at 100k like we did with leaded gas, non-detergent, cast iron engines. When was the last time you heard of somebody needing a re-bore or a valve job like in the 60's and 70's.
Lot's of old beliefs, prejudice and history to overcome. I believe the factory change of 10k is fine. Even for break-in. Modern oil filters work well enough to handle any break-in residue. One could argue that changing the oil too soon could prevent the engine from bedding in properly.
