I thought I'd close the loop regarding my experiences with the oxygen sensor issue. I got a genuine Bosch sensor (#16174) to replace my front original sensor (saab p/n 497909). Removing my original and inspecting the number etched on the side of sensor: 00 258.116 174 with 483101 stamped higher on the body and 'made in Germany' written as well.
My replacement Bosch sensor (from a chain auto store) had 016174 stamped on the side with 280411 stamped on the higher side of the body, close to the wire leads. The new Bosch sensor box is marked on the endflap: 16174 0 258 006 174 0VT (my guess is the numbers on the higher side of the body are date codes)
The new Bosch sensor lead length and connector was IDENTICAL to the original Saab part.
Reset the engine management CPU by pulling out fuse #17 for 30 mins, then drove the car about 80 miles with no problems.
Being an electronic engineer and dealing with electronic part numbers for the last 30+ years, my experience tells me these are identical in form and design specs.
It was also very nice that the new sensor had a coating of neverseize on the threads...a nice touch.
As always, YMMV.
